Kashayaam - an Ayurvedic remedy for cough & cold

What is kashaayam?

Kashaayam is an Ayurvedic tea prepared by boiling a combination of healthy spices and herbs - a process that extracts their medicinal benefits. The properties of the ingredients in this Ayurvedic tonic aid in fortifying your body and overcoming illness. This is an age old natural remedy without any side-effects that can be benefitted by all ages.

What are the benefits of the ingredients? Ginger: high in anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties making it effective in treating cough and cold. Ginger promotes digestion, circulation and overall health and wellbeing.


Black Pepper: rich in anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Black pepper helps in treating colds, flu, aches, and pains as well as some digestive conditions.

Tulsi: incredibly effective in boosting the immune system. It promotes optimal heart and lung functioning, reduces mucus in the respiratory system, making it effective in treating cough and cold.


Clove: packed with anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, aids in soothing the throat and preventing cough.


Cardamom: has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and cancer-fighting properties. It is helpful in treating cough, asthma , nausea and vomiting. Cardamom is also beneficial in treating anxiety.

Cinnamon: helpful in improving cardiac conditions, blood related problems, cough and cold.

It is effective in treating asthma and chronic respiratory problems. 


Honey: a natural antibiotic and loaded with antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Honey increases body heat and helps in improving immunity thus fighting against common cold and flu. It is effective in treating dry and wet cough, as well as upper respiratory tract infections.


Preparing kashaayam Ingredients:

  • Water - 2 cups

  • Cardamom pods - 2 pods

  • Black peppercorns - 5 to 6 (or 1/2 teaspoon pepper powder)

  • Cloves - 3 to 4

  • Tulsi tea leaves – 1/2 teaspoon (or 1 tulsi tea bag)

  • Fresh ginger – 1/2 inch piece (crushed or sliced)

  • Cinnamon - 1/2 inch piece

  • Raw organic honey - 1/4 teaspoon


Preparation:

  • Add the cloves, black peppercorns, cardamom pods, and cinnamon to a pot and dry roast for 30 seconds.

  • Add 2 cups of water, the tulsi tea leaves and ginger. Heat for 10-15 minutes or until the amount of water has reduced by half.

  • Turn the heat off and let the tea cool off a little.

  • When no longer boiling hot, but still warm, strain the tea and pour into a cup.

  • Add 1/4 teaspoon of raw organic honey

  • Ready for you to sip!


Tips: You can reduce the amount of black pepper and ginger to your taste or especially if you are preparing this remedy for a child.
